IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Yes, In many countries people do not recycle rubbish to much extent. This process is disturbing the sustainability too much because when you recycle the already used products less amount of new products will be formed, smaller raw material will be used and the carbon emissions and pollution will be reduced.

There could be many reasons behind the concept of not recycling the rubbish, for example;

1. Lack of Awareness: Most of the individuals do not have the idea that some of their products can be re-used again after recycling.

2. Absence of Technology: In many countries, there is no proper technology installed,from which individuals can get the benefit.

3. Insufficient Resiurces: People see the recycling as extra cost. They think its better to use a new product instead of investing money on outdated one.

There are many routes that can be adopted to change the concept of people about recycling;

1. Government Incentives: Goverments of country can play a significant role by providing subsidies to the people for installing the recycling technology or adopting recycling initiatives.

2. Awareness sessions: Awareness sessions or TV shows should be used as basic source to change the mind mapping of people.

For Example, In Pakistan, There is an initiative in Lahore in which people have to come with their plastic bottles at collection centres and they are being rewarded directly by government of pakistan when their data is updated online.

As well as in Euorope, where they take extra money with the products that can be recycled. Then people consume the drinks, collect the bottles, put them into machine and they are paid back of the extra money thay give first.

So, these initiatives can be adopted in all other countries to increase the recycling and decrease the new product formation as the new product is the result of many carbon emissions and use of raw materia.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both questions: it identifies reasons such as limited awareness, inadequate technology and perceived costs, then proposes incentives and awareness campaigns. The Lahore bottle-collection scheme and the European deposit-return example are relevant, concrete support, and the final sentence links recycling to reduced resource use and emissions. This gives the answer a clear, relevant foundation. However, some points are asserted rather than explained: for instance, the claim that people see recycling as an extra cost is not clearly connected to the earlier point about technology, and the proposed awareness sessions are not developed with a specific example of what they would teach. The response already shows some effective support, but fuller explanation of how each cause leads to low recycling and how each measure addresses it would make the discussion more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The overall sequence is easy to follow: an opening statement is followed by reasons, solutions, examples and a conclusion. Numbered lists make the main points visible, and phrases such as “For Example” and “As well as” signal supporting material. However, the list format makes the essay feel more like notes than a connected argument, and some links are mechanical or unclear. “As well as in Europe” is not a complete transition into the comparison, while the relationship between the technology point and the cost point is not made explicit. Paragraphing the reasons and solutions into developed prose, then using clearer links such as “Another reason” and “To address this,” would improve progression. Referencing could also be clearer when moving from the examples back to the general recommendation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “sustainability,” “raw material,” “carbon emissions,” “subsidies” and “collection centres,” which helps communicate the subject. It also attempts more formal expressions such as “play a significant role.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “recycle rubbish to much extent,” “change the mind mapping,” “new product formation” and “paid back of the extra money.” Spelling errors such as “Resiurces,” “Goverments” and “Euorope” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main ideas, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard collocations—for example, “recycle more,” “raise public awareness” and “receive a refund”—and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is some variety in sentence forms, including a conditional clause in “when you recycle the already used products” and a relative clause in “products that can be recycled.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “There could be many reasons … for example;” is awkwardly punctuated, and “people have to come with their plastic bottles” has an unclear preposition pattern. In “they are paid back of the extra money thay give first,” the passive construction and surrounding sentence structure are not controlled. Capitalisation after commas and within sentences is also inconsistent. Build accuracy by checking articles, prepositions and clause boundaries, and practise combining list points into complete sentences. More reliable control of these patterns would support the range already attempted.
