IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Although recycling can improve the environment of many countries, people are unable to recycle many products. This is mainly because of the inadequate facilities and lack of awareness among people. Government may provide substantial facilities and raise awareness compagins to cope with this negligence.

Due to lack of facilities people may find it difficult to dispose off their garbage. If recycling bins are located far from their homes, they would be relectant to go there. People also may not know how they could separate recyclable items from their daily utensils, it may also be time consuming practice. Inadequate awareness is also a major contributor as people are unaware that how individual efforts can have huge impact on sustainability of environment. They may not aware of the consequences and thus may not consider recycling as their daily habit.

Several measures could help overcome these barriers. First, local authorities should make recycling easier by providing clearly labelled bins in residential areas and ensuring that recyclable materials are collected regularly. Simple instructions explaining how to separate waste would also reduce confusion. Second, governments and schools should introduce educational campaigns that demonstrate how recycling helps conserve resources and reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill. For example, schools could encourage students to separate waste at home and explain these practices to their families, helping recycling become a routine habit. Financial incentives, such as deposit-refund schemes for beverage containers, could provide an additional reason for people to participate.

In conclusion, inadequate facilities and a lack of awareness are important reasons why people fail to recycle enough. Improving access to recycling services, providing clear guidance and encouraging participation through education and incentives would make recycling both easier and more appealing. These measures could help establish more sustainable waste-disposal habits across community.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the question and maintains a clear position: limited facilities and low awareness are identified as causes, while improved access, education and incentives are proposed as solutions. The explanations are relevant and extended—for instance, distant bins may discourage participation, and school campaigns could help practices spread to families. The deposit-refund example also adds a practical measure. This fits the descriptor for a response that covers all parts and supports its ideas. To strengthen the development further, explain more specifically how the proposed measures would overcome the barriers, or add a concrete example of a successful recycling scheme. Some claims, such as the effect of individual efforts on sustainability, remain broad.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear progression from causes to solutions and then a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposting such as “First,” “Second,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. Ideas within the solutions paragraph also move logically from local services to education and incentives. Cohesive devices are generally used flexibly, although some links between sentences could be smoother. For example, the shift from the difficulty of finding bins to separating recyclable items is understandable but could be connected more explicitly. The opening paragraph also compresses the causes and proposed response into a short summary before the body develops them. More varied referencing and transitions would make the flow less dependent on explicit sequencing words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The response uses a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “recyclable materials,” “conserve resources,” “landfill,” “deposit-refund schemes,” and “sustainable waste-disposal habits.” These choices show some flexibility and help explain both causes and solutions. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “dispose off their garbage” should be “dispose of their rubbish,” “daily utensils” does not mean everyday waste, and “awareness compagins” contains a spelling error. “Cope with this negligence” is also an awkward description of the problem. To move further, use accurate collocations consistently and select precise terms for waste and recycling processes; the stronger vocabulary already present provides a good foundation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

There is a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional sentences (“If recycling bins are located far from their homes, they would be reluctant to go there”) and a relative clause describing materials “sent to landfill.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the later solutions paragraph is generally well controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in the early discussion: “people are unaware that how” should be “people are unaware of how,” “They may not aware” needs “be,” and “a time consuming practice” requires an article and hyphenation. The sentence beginning “People also may not know…” joins two independent ideas with a comma. Check clause patterns, missing verbs and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied structures.
