IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.
Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
In modern society, waste management has become a critical environment challenge, with recycling rates lower in numerous nation. The main reason behind that is lack in municipal infrastructure and a general lack of public education regarding sorting procedures. To address this issue, governments must invest heavily in accessible recycling facilities and introduce various financial incentive schemes.
The primary reason behind recycling habits is to build current waste ecosystems. In many urban and rural residential zones, public recycling are not available which forces the individual to transport their recyclable materials over a long distance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The opening identifies two relevant causes—limited municipal infrastructure and weak public education—and proposes facilities and financial incentives as solutions. However, the response only begins to explain the infrastructure problem, saying residents may need to transport recyclables over a long distance. It does not develop the education point or explain how the proposed incentives would change behaviour, and there are no supporting examples. The response is also substantially below the required length, so the task is addressed only minimally rather than with developed answers to both questions. To improve, explain each cause and solution in detail, show how they connect, and include a specific example, such as convenient collection points or a deposit-return scheme.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic overall direction: the first paragraph introduces causes and solutions, and the second starts to explain a cause. The linking phrase “To address this issue” helps signal a shift from the problem to possible action. However, the response ends before a clear progression can be established, and the second paragraph’s opening sentence, “The primary reason behind recycling habits is to build current waste ecosystems,” does not clearly connect to the point that follows. The ideas would be easier to follow if each paragraph had one clear purpose and the topic sentence accurately introduced its content. Develop the cause, then explain the solutions in a separate paragraph, using clear links between each point.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response attempts some topic-specific vocabulary, including “waste management,” “municipal infrastructure,” “recycling facilities,” and “financial incentive schemes.” These choices show an effort to discuss the issue beyond basic terms. However, several word choices or combinations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “critical environment challenge,” “numerous nation,” “recycling habits is to build current waste ecosystems,” and “public recycling are not available.” These errors make parts of the argument difficult to interpret and limit the precision of the vocabulary. Aim for natural collocations and accurate word forms—for example, “environmental challenge,” “many countries,” and “recycling services are unavailable.” More precise vocabulary will help express the causes and proposed measures clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes both simple statements and a more complex clause, as in “public recycling are not available which forces the individual to transport their recyclable materials over a long distance.” This shows an attempt to vary sentence structure, and the main message is generally recoverable. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction recur: “recycling rates lower” needs a verb, “recycling are” does not agree with its subject, and the relative clause beginning “which forces” needs clearer punctuation and reference. The sentence “The primary reason behind recycling habits is to build…” is also structurally unclear. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause links, and use a mix of accurate simple and complex sentences before attempting more elaborate structures.
