IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Folks do not recycle their garbage in multiple countries as much as they could specially in developing countries like Pakistan and India. I think there are multiple reasons for it. For instance, lack of awareness of positive impact of rubbish recycling as well as unavailability of resources such as funding and proper waste management system.

Funding for recycling is one of the major reason as multiple developing countries are focusing on basic needs for their residents and they have other major issues to focus on like terrorism, food shortage and shelter. So such countries can not spend their resources on waste management systems for recycling their rubbish.

Lack of awareness is another biggest reason for not proper recycling the rubbish. There are multiple ways to manage rubbish in optimized way but still individuals opt bad practices. For instance, livestock waste is essential ingredient for soil in farms but still multiple countries waste it in water streams.

Governments as well as individuals have to take step for better waste management or else our cities will end up similar to slum areas of Dehli. Government should invest in recycling plants and individuals have to comply with the policies of waste management system.

Recently at my home town Hazro, people started waste recycling plant and after 1 year our whole village is facing shortage of waste to keep running those plants and also those plants are now generating huge revenue.

In conclusion, countries needs to motivate their residents to help them recycle rubbish and people should take care of basic principles of waste management for better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you identify limited funding and lack of awareness as reasons, then recommend government investment and public compliance. The Hazro example is particularly useful because it illustrates how a recycling plant can become viable and generate revenue. However, the causes are developed more fully than the proposed solutions. For example, “individuals have to comply with the policies” does not explain how people would be encouraged or supported to do so, and the claim about livestock waste could be linked more clearly to awareness. Your position is clear, but some points remain broad or insufficiently explained. To strengthen the response, develop practical measures—such as convenient collection facilities, public education, or incentives—and show how each would address a stated cause.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on two causes, a paragraph on solutions, a local example, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “another,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. The Hazro example appears in a separate paragraph without an explicit link to the proposed government and individual actions, while “or else” moves abruptly from recommendations to a negative outcome. The introduction also lists causes that are then discussed, but the relationship between the lack of resources and funding could be made more precise. Use clearer transitions to show how each example supports the preceding point and how the solutions respond to the causes.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “waste management,” “recycling plants,” “livestock waste,” and “revenue,” which helps communicate the subject clearly. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “basic needs” and “food shortage.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, though: “Folks” is conversational for an academic essay, “another biggest reason” is not a natural expression, and “waste it in water streams” does not clearly express the intended action. “Optimized way” is also awkward in this context. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and academic tone. Aim for natural collocations and consistent formal wording, especially when describing causes and environmental practices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as multiple developing countries are focusing on basic needs” and a contrast introduced by “but still.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “one of the major reason” needs plural agreement, “countries needs” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “people started waste recycling plant” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “There are multiple ways…” also shifts awkwardly into “but still individuals opt,” making the relationship between the clauses less controlled. Work on agreement, articles, and sentence construction, and check punctuation around longer sentences. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make your argument easier to read.
