IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.
Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many people do not intend to maximize the recycling of their waste in severl countries. The reason is the long distances people have to travel to deposit their rubbish. The government of the country can build new recycling centres near the city area or collect the waste from each society regularly.
The major reason why people often do not put maximum effort to recycle their household waste is the huge distance between their house and recycling centres. People who work throughout the day gets tired and avoid travelling these long distances to deposit their waste. For example, a recycling centre is situated more than 20 kilometers away from the urban location to avoid the foul smell. As a result, people avoid doing these chores on daily basis.
The government of the country can take initiative by arranging specially equipped vehicle that can collect recyclable and non-recyclable waste from all the regions of the city. This will reduce the effort of people and lead to more recycling or waste. For example, a vehicle having two sections, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste, runs through the city and collects both types of rubbish, which later is taken to recycling centres. This will help government collect as much rubbish as they want.
In conclusion, I think that many people do not prefer travelling faraway after a hectic day at work, which is why they do not recycle their waste as much as they can. The government of the country can introduce door-to-door waste collection from every house to simplify the process of recycling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: you identify the distance to recycling facilities as a reason and propose government-run collection as a solution. The examples of a centre over 20 kilometres away and a vehicle with separate sections make the response relevant and help explain the proposal. Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. However, the explanation of why centres are distant—“to avoid the foul smell”—is asserted rather than explored, and the discussion focuses on one main cause and one closely related solution. The claim that people avoid the task “on daily basis” also leaves unclear why recycling must happen daily. To develop the response further, explain additional barriers or show more fully how the proposed collection system would increase recycling.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the cause, a paragraph proposing a solution, and a conclusion. The progression from the inconvenience of travelling to a door-to-door collection scheme is easy to follow, and examples are placed in the relevant paragraphs. Linking phrases such as “For example” and “As a result” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, the connections are somewhat mechanical, and some references are imprecise: “This will help government collect as much rubbish as they want” does not clearly explain how collection leads to more recycling. The conclusion largely repeats the opening points. Use more precise referencing and develop the links between the problem, the solution, and its expected effect.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “recycling centres,” “household waste,” “recyclable and non-recyclable waste,” and “door-to-door waste collection.” These terms make the subject clear, and phrases such as “foul smell” and “hectic day at work” add some specificity. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “maximize the recycling” and “more recycling or waste” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “all the regions of the city” is less direct than the context requires. The spelling error “severl” is also noticeable. Aim for accurate collocations and word forms, and avoid repeating “waste” and “rubbish” when a more precise term such as “recyclables” would fit.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “people who work throughout the day” and a conditional-style explanation beginning “which is why.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraph structure supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “People who work throughout the day gets tired,” the plural subject requires “get”; “on daily basis” needs an article; and “arranging specially equipped vehicle” needs an article before “vehicle.” The sentence describing the vehicle’s two sections is also awkwardly constructed, making the relationship between the sections and the waste less clear. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied structures.
