In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recycling is an important practise to preserve the nature and keep our environment clear. However , the tendancy of practising this activity can vary signaficantly from one country to another and from one inhabitant to another.

This can be explained by several reasons. For instance , some people are not fully aware of the importance of recycling and how it plays a key role in protecting the environment and the animals. In addition ,some will underestimate the implications of throwing garbage in the street to their well being .

Moreover ,indiffrence for collective concerns due to the lack of awareness can be one way to explain this behavior. Since people would not see a direct advantage of recycling that would affect their life ,they avoid doing it due to the lack of motivation.

However ,many countries were able to convince their citizens to recylce more by offering incentives and raising their awareness. For instance ,policymakers can invent solutions to give financial rewards for people who actively participate in recycling. In addition, goverments should educate the public by the cons of throwing household waste and the advantages and opportunities genereated by recylcing those rubbish

One brilliant idea that was implemented in European countries, is that the goverments installed garbage cans for different types of trash material thus the recylcing process becomes easier.

To conclude ,recylcing is a social duty that everyone should participate in. If it is not with direct recycling ,it should be with at least not throwing garbage in the streets.Whilet the goverment plays an important role in imposing this practise and raising awarenss, ctizens also need to be active and be self-aware.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that limited awareness and motivation explain low recycling rates, and propose education, financial incentives and separate bins as solutions. These are relevant ideas, and the examples of public education and sorting facilities help make the response concrete. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that people do not see a “direct advantage” could be developed by explaining how convenience, cost or habits affect their choices. The proposed rewards also need a clearer account of how they would work. Your conclusion restates the shared responsibility of citizens and government, but the response would be stronger if each main idea were extended with a specific explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, reasons, possible solutions and a conclusion. Paragraphing generally helps the reader follow this progression, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Moreover” and “To conclude” signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the reasoning is not fully joined up. The sentence beginning “Since people would not see a direct advantage” follows the point about collective concerns, but the link between these ideas could be made more explicit. The solutions paragraph also moves quickly from incentives to education and then to bins. Grouping and developing each solution in a clearer sequence, with more precise references to what “this” or “it” means, would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “incentives,” “financial rewards,” “household waste” and “collective concerns.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “practise,” “tendancy,” “signaficantly,” “indiffrence,” “recylce” and “goverments.” Some collocations are also unnatural: “preserve the nature,” “environment clear” and “educate the public by the cons” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Aim for accurate, conventional combinations such as “protect nature,” “keep the environment clean” and “educate the public about the disadvantages.” Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and some more complex forms, including the conditional “If it is not with direct recycling…” and the reason clause beginning “Since people would not see…”. The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “some people are not fully aware … and how it plays” shifts awkwardly between plural “people” and singular “it”; “the governments installed” also needs a clearer, consistent tense in this general claim. Several sentences have comma-spacing or sentence-boundary problems, such as “animals. In addition” and “streets.Whilet”. The final sentence is difficult to parse because its clauses are joined without clear punctuation. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
