Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While you have identified some main features, the analysis is quite superficial. You have attempted to compare the three countries, but the data points are sometimes confusingly presented (e.g., comparing study hours in Japan to sleep hours in the UK). To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview and include more precise data comparisons. The lack of length means the task is only partially addressed, as you have not provided enough detail to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hindered by the limited length and some awkward transitions. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, such as 'To begin with' and 'Overall'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the three nations. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows logically into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and limited. You rely on basic terms like 'pupil', 'tutee', and 'scholar' to refer to students, which is not always appropriate in an academic context. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'expend more than half of their day for studies' and 'lie down' instead of 'sleeping' or 'resting'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary and improve your control over collocations related to data description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'proportion of typical weekday for pupil', 'German pupil do studies', and 'as compare to'. These errors, while not always impeding communication, are frequent enough to lower the score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Proofreading for basic errors like pluralisation and verb tense consistency will help you achieve a higher score.
