Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar graph illustrates the information about the typical weekday activities of students in different countries such as United Kingdom, Japan and Germany.

From an overall perspective, it is evident that the least amount of students prefers to relax on weekdays, while maximum amount of students do study in their weekdays.

To begin with Japan, it has witnessed higher amount of students who are involved in studying, which is 13, while the least amount of students prefer to relax during a typical weekday. This amount is the smallest amount as compared to another two nations. Noticeably, in Germany, major proportion of students spend most time in studying and least time relaxing, which is 9 and 8, respectively.

In contrast, in UK almost equal amount of students is accounted for sleeping and studying, with the minimal difference of 0.5as their figures are 8.5 and 8. However, relaxing is least done activity among students with the amount of 7.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the task by identifying the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully selected and reported on the three countries and their activities. However, the analysis is somewhat limited. While you mention the figures, the comparison between the countries could be more sophisticated. For instance, you state that Japan has the 'highest amount of students' involved in studying, but you do not explicitly compare this to the other nations in a way that highlights the overall trends effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that you not only list the data but also synthesize the information to draw clearer comparisons between the three groups.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'However' to transition between ideas. While these are functional, the flow is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the general overview and the specific details could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes slightly unclear, such as when you refer to 'another two nations' without naming them or grouping them more effectively. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring clear reference points will enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'witnessed', and 'proportion'. However, there is a tendency to repeat the word 'amount' frequently, which limits the sophistication of your writing. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'least amount of students prefers' (should be 'fewest number of students prefer') and 'least done activity' (which is slightly unnatural). To improve, try to use a wider variety of synonyms for 'number' or 'proportion' and focus on more precise collocations to describe statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'least amount of students prefers' (subject-verb agreement) and 'as compared to another two nations' (article usage). Additionally, '0.5as' is a punctuation error where a space is missing. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on improving your control over articles and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
