IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar graph depicts the information about how the children in the UK, Japan and Germany spend their weekday.
Overall, it can be seen that the highest proportion of the day is spent while studying in Japan and Germany; however, sleeping is highly preferred by the students in the UK.
In Japan, the children preferred to study for the longest time period which is 13 hours; however the figure is little low in the case of Germany and UK which is 9 hours and 8 hours, respectively. In contrast, the UK students sleep for nearly eight and hours per day which is more than other countries.
Additionally, the figure for sleeping hours declined slightly to 8 hours in the case of Germany and to 7 hours in Japan. Similar time is spent by learners to relax in UK and Germany which is 7 hours per day. The students living in Japan prefer to relax for only four hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the bar chart and makes relevant comparisons between the three countries. You have successfully identified the key trends regarding study, sleep, and relaxation time. However, the report could be improved by ensuring the data points are presented more accurately. For instance, stating that UK students sleep for 'nearly eight and hours' is confusing and inaccurate based on standard chart interpretations. Additionally, while you mention the main features, a more structured approach—perhaps grouping by activity rather than country—would help highlight the comparisons more effectively. The overview is clear, but the supporting details need to be more precise to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'in contrast', and 'additionally' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of information. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to ensure that the comparisons between the countries are integrated more naturally rather than listed sequentially.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'proportion', 'figure', and 'learners'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'the figure is little low' (should be 'slightly lower') and 'eight and hours'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', and 'compare' to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated control of language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the children in the UK, Japan and Germany spend their weekday' (missing 'how'), and 'the figure for sleeping hours declined slightly to 8 hours in the case of Germany and to 7 hours in Japan' (which is a slightly awkward construction). Punctuation is generally adequate, but there are minor errors that occur throughout the text. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring higher accuracy would help elevate your score.
