Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have attempted to identify some trends, the analysis is often unclear or inaccurate. For example, stating that 'relaxing' had a downward trend in Japan while Germany and the UK had 'similar rates of about 7' is vague and does not clearly reference the data provided in the chart. Furthermore, the description of the data is confusing, particularly the use of 'perceived rates' and 'actual number of students', which are not supported by the chart. To improve, ensure you accurately report the data points and provide clear comparisons between the three countries.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as 'all in all' and 'notably'. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the three countries. To improve, use a wider range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping data by activity or by country, rather than jumping between them in a way that confuses the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'numbers', 'rates', and 'trend'. There are also instances of awkward word choices, such as 'From the eye of the bird' (an incorrect idiom) and 'perceived likelihood', which do not fit the context of describing a bar chart. To achieve a higher band score, you should use more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', or 'accounted for'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs will also help you convey the information more accurately and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For instance, 'the activities done by the students... by numbers' is awkward, and 'the rate of Relaxing constituted the lowest percentage' is grammatically imprecise. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'at this activity' instead of 'for this activity'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is noticeable. Focus on mastering basic sentence structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
