Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the typical weekday for students in three different countries.

Overall, it is evident that Japan spends more time studying as compared to other countries. Additionally, both the UK and Germany has scheduled the same hours for relaxing.

From the graph, it is clear that Japan has allocated 13 hours for study while the UK and Germany has scheduled 8 hours and 9 hours respectively. In comparison, the UK and Germany have allocated the same number of hours in a day for leisure. The UK set aside 7 hours while Germany scheduled 7 hours. On the other hand, Japan only allocated 4 hours in a day for relaxing.

Although the countries have put aside different hours for sleeping, neither of them allocated more than 8.5 or less than 7. The UK scheduled 8.5 which was more as compared to other time put aside by other countries. This was followed by Germany and Japan each scheduling 8 hours and 7 hours respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the bar chart, including study, leisure, and sleep data for the three countries. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as Japan's higher study hours and the similarity in leisure time between the UK and Germany. The comparisons are generally accurate and relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are presented with complete accuracy; for instance, you mentioned Japan's sleep time as 7 hours, but the chart indicates 8 hours. Additionally, ensure that the overview clearly highlights the most significant differences rather than just listing facts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Additionally', 'In comparison', and 'On the other hand'. However, the flow between sentences could be improved to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the transition between the discussion of study hours and leisure hours is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data, which helps the reader follow your argument. Further practice in using a wider variety of linking words will help improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocated', 'scheduled', and 'illustrated' correctly. The language is generally clear and appropriate for an academic report. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, as you rely heavily on the word 'scheduled' and 'allocated' throughout the text. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms or collocations related to data reporting, such as 'devoted to', 'accounted for', or 'spent on'. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning without difficulty, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Although' clause in the final paragraph. However, there are several subject-verb agreement errors that detract from the accuracy, such as 'the UK and Germany has scheduled' (should be 'have scheduled') and 'the UK scheduled 8.5 which was more as compared to other time' (should be 'other times'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and refining your use of comparative structures will significantly improve your grammatical control.
