The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates how students in the UK, Japan and Germany typically divide their time between sleeping, studying and relaxing on a weekday.

Overall, studying is the activity that takes up the most time for students in Japan and Germany, whereas in the UK, sleeping is prioritised slightly more than studying. In all three countries, relaxing takes up the smallest proportion of time.

In the UK, students spend the most time sleeping, at 8.5 hours, which is marginally more than the 8 hours they spend studying. The remaining 7 hours of their day is spent relaxing.

By contrast, Japanese students devote considerably more time to studying than their counterparts in the other two countries, with 13 hours spent on this activity. This is almost double the time spent sleeping, which stands at just 7 hours. Relaxing accounts for the smallest share of the day in Japan, at only 4 hours.

In Germany, studying is also the dominant activity, though the gap between activities is less pronounced than in Japan. German students spend 9 hours studying, compared with 8 hours sleeping and 7 hours relaxing, meaning their overall time distribution is fairly balanced across the three activities.
