IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph compares the typical weekdays for students in three different nations. The data is calibrated in hours.
Overall, as is observed, students from Japan have highest interest towards studying, whereas they are least attracted by relaxation.
In the UK, the majority of time spent by students is on sleeping which is 8.5 hours and this is the highest in whole graph in sleeping. However, it shows a related trend towards studying with 8 hours of time, whereas they spent least time in relaxing with the number of 7 hours. Moreover, Japanese students have intermediate focus on sleeping which is 7 hours and relaxation has lower influence on these students with number 4 hours and it is the lowest number in the whole discussion.
Moving to the rest of the description, Germany plays a balanced role in all aspects like the difference between each aspect is only of 1 hours. German students allocate their time in studying with 9 hours and they also take sleep of 8 hours respectively. Nevertheless, students are giving less time on relaxing in Germany with overall 7 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the bar chart, including comparisons between the three countries. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccurate reporting of the data. For instance, you state that German students spend 9 hours studying and 8 hours sleeping, but the chart shows 9 hours for studying and 8 hours for sleeping, which is accurate; however, your claim that Japanese students have the 'highest interest towards studying' is a subjective interpretation rather than a factual summary of the data. Additionally, the description of the UK data contains some confusion regarding the ranking of hours. To improve, ensure that data points are cited precisely and avoid subjective commentary on student 'interest'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Moving to the rest of the description' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'the number of 7 hours' or 'with number 4 hours'. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within the body paragraphs could be smoother to better highlight the comparisons between the countries.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'calibrated', 'intermediate', and 'allocate'. However, there are instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors, such as 'highest interest towards studying', 'number of 7 hours', and 'has lower influence on these students'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations for describing data, such as 'the highest proportion of time' or 'a significant difference'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the difference between each aspect is only of 1 hours' (should be '1 hour') and 'students are giving less time on relaxing' (should be 'spending less time on relaxation'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will improve your accuracy.
