IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart compares the amount of time that people in the UK, Japan and Germany spend on three different activities: sleeping, studying and relaxing.
Overall, it is clear that studying accounts for the greatest amount of time in Japan and Germany, whereas sleeping takes up the largest proportion of time in the UK. Japan records the highest figure for studying, while relaxation is the least time-consuming activity in Japan. By contrast, the figures for relaxation are identical in the UK and Germany.
In the UK, people spend approximately 8.5 hours sleeping, making this the most time-consuming activity. They devote 8 hours to studying, while relaxation accounts for 7 hours. The differences between the three activities are therefore relatively small.
In Japan, however, the pattern is considerably different. People spend 13 hours studying, which is by far the highest figure shown on the chart. This is almost twice the amount of time spent relaxing, at just 4 hours. Sleeping accounts for 7 hours, which is one hour less than the figure for the UK.
In Germany, people spend 9 hours studying, followed by 8 hours sleeping and 7 hours relaxing. Thus, Germany has the highest relaxation figure jointly with the UK, while its study time is 4 hours lower than Japan's.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses the prompt by summarizing the main features of the bar chart and providing relevant comparisons. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as Japan's high study time and the UK's focus on sleep. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. You have included specific data points to support your descriptions, which meets the requirements for a Task 1 response. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully integrated; for instance, you could further emphasize the contrast between the countries by grouping the data more analytically rather than country-by-country.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by country. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'however', and 'Thus' effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the analysis. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is easy to follow throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, which demonstrates a high level of control.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'least time-consuming activity', 'devote', and 'accounts for' are used accurately. You show an awareness of style and collocation, which allows for a natural flow of information. While the vocabulary is appropriate and effective, it remains within a standard range. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'time' or 'amount' to demonstrate a wider lexical range, though the current usage is perfectly adequate for a clear and accurate report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while relaxation is the least time-consuming activity') and comparative structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The sentence structures are varied, moving between simple, compound, and complex forms, which keeps the writing engaging and professional. Your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report.
