Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the bar chart and makes relevant comparisons between the three countries. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the score. While the key data points are identified, the analysis lacks depth and the failure to meet the length constraint means the task is not fully addressed. To improve, you should expand on the comparisons by grouping data more effectively and ensuring you meet the minimum word count to allow for a more comprehensive overview of the data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from an overview to specific data points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, the transition 'In the uk...' and 'In japan...' is used mechanically. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly, such as 'In contrast,' 'Conversely,' or 'Similarly,' to improve the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'typicaly', 'amonut', 'studing', 'japenese', and 'whlie'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. While you successfully use terms like 'considerably more' and 'relaxation time', the range is limited. To improve, focus on accurate spelling and incorporating more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'expenditure', or 'allocated to'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'japenese students spends' (subject-verb agreement) and 'the uk' (capitalisation). Punctuation is generally functional, but the consistency of error-free sentences is low. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure proper capitalisation of proper nouns. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or participial phrases, would also help demonstrate better grammatical control.
