Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart elucidates the amount of time that students spend on different activities during a weekday. The students belong to three nations: UK, Japan, and Germany. At a glance, Japanese students studied more and relaxed less, as compared to British and German students.

To begin with, Japan recorded the largest number of hours dedicated for studying, where students spent half of their day, which was 13 hours. Followed by sleeping which made up 7 hours. Relaxing was the not preferred by Japanese students, that constituted for only 4 hours. Coming to UK and Germany, nearly equal hours were allocated for sleeping, studying, and relaxing. Germany led the studying time at 9 hours per day, followed by UK, that was having study time of one-thirds of the day. Moreover, British and German students were having sleeping time of 8.5 and 8 hours respectively. Surprisingly, the relaxing time was equal in both the countries (7 hours).

Overall, Japanese were studying for nearly half of the day. While in UK, students were sleeping more than studying. Germans allocated almost equal time for different activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the bar chart and makes relevant comparisons between the three countries. You have clearly highlighted the contrast between Japanese students' study habits and those of their British and German counterparts. However, the report could be improved by ensuring greater accuracy in data reporting. For example, you state that UK students spend one-third of their day studying, but the chart indicates 8 hours, which is exactly one-third, yet your phrasing is slightly ambiguous. Additionally, ensure that all data points are clearly supported by the provided information to avoid minor inaccuracies in interpretation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Overall' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition 'Coming to UK and Germany' is a bit informal. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis, which helps in maintaining a clear structure throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'elucidates', 'dedicated', and 'allocated'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'Relaxing was the not preferred' and 'that was having study time', which sound slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points without difficulty, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'that constituted for only 4 hours' (unnecessary preposition) and 'British and German students were having sleeping time' (awkward continuous tense usage). There are also minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more natural phrasing would improve the overall accuracy.
