Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified the main features of the bar chart, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, cohesive overview. You have successfully selected key data points for comparison, such as the study hours in Japan versus the UK and Germany. However, the lack of sufficient length means that the information is not fully developed. To improve, ensure you provide a more detailed summary and extend your analysis of the data to meet the length requirement, ensuring all parts of the task are addressed thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical (e.g., 'moreover', 'furthermore'). The transition between sentences is occasionally abrupt, and the logical flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more naturally. Paragraphing is present but the internal structure of the paragraphs is quite basic. To reach a higher band, focus on using a broader range of cohesive devices to create a smoother progression of ideas throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but remains quite limited and repetitive. You rely on basic verbs like 'devote' and 'spend' throughout the text. There are also some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'various nations' instead of 'different countries' and 'germany students' instead of 'German students'. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'allocate', 'account for', or 'the majority of time'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'IN germany'), missing articles (e.g., 'in UK'), and errors in subject-verb agreement or word order (e.g., 'germany students'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity of the text. To improve, focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles, capitalization, and sentence structure. Proofreading your work for these common slips will help you achieve a higher score.
