Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the typical weekday distribution for sleeping, studying and relaxing in three nations.

Overall, the bar depicts the time allocation of three countries. Japanese students spend the majority of time studying. However, British and German students invest their time similarly for relaxation.

Examining the details of UK students, who spend the majority of their time for sleeping at around 8.5 hours. Similarly, study covers 8 hours, indicating a similar pattern for sleep and study. However, British students spend their 7 hours for relaxing.

In Japan, the highest proportion is for studying around 13 hours, showing a sharp learning pattern among other nations. While only 7 and 4 hours are invested in sleep and relaxation respectively, it indicates a meagre time for leisure.

Germany follows a similar pattern as the UK with minimal changes at 8 hours for sleep and 9 hours for study as well as relaxation time is same for both countries' students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart, including the three countries and the three activities. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For example, the student states UK students spend 8.5 hours sleeping and 8 hours studying, but the chart shows 8 hours for sleep and 7 hours for study. Furthermore, the comparison between Germany and the UK is vague, stating 'minimal changes' without specifying the data. To improve, ensure that all figures are accurately transcribed from the chart and that comparisons are supported by specific data points rather than general observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each country, and a brief overview. Cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'However', and 'While' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the comparison to the UK is not fully explained. The use of paragraphing is sufficient, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'distribution', 'allocation', and 'proportion'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'invest their time similarly for relaxation' and 'sharp learning pattern'. The range is somewhat limited, and the student relies on repetitive phrasing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and improving collocations, such as using 'allocate time' instead of 'invest time' in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'UK students, who spend the majority of their time for sleeping at around 8.5 hours' (a sentence fragment) and 'relaxing time is same for both countries' students' (missing articles and awkward phrasing). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall clarity. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve the score.
