Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart compares the number of days students in the UK, Japan and Germany spent on three activities: studying, sleeping and relaxing.

Overall, studying took up the most time for students in Japan, while relaxing accounted for the fewest days. By contrast, students in the UK and Germany divided their time more evenly among the three activities.

In the UK, students spent 8.5 days sleeping, making this their most time-consuming activity. This was followed by studying at 8 days, while they spent 7 days relaxing. The differences between the three figures were therefore relatively small.

The pattern was quite different in Japan. Students spent 13 days studying, which was considerably higher than the figures for the other two countries. Sleeping accounted for 7 days, while relaxing took only 4 days. Thus, the difference between studying and relaxing was 9 days. In Germany, students spent 9 days studying, 8 days sleeping and 7 days relaxing. These figures were close to those for the UK, although German students spent slightly more time studying.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying and reporting the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully selected key data points to compare the three countries, such as the high study time in Japan versus the more balanced distribution in the UK and Germany. The overview provides a clear summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high band score. All parts of the prompt are covered, and the comparisons are relevant and accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the chart, as the interpretation of 'days' as a unit of time for a 'typical weekday' is slightly unusual, though the data reporting remains accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, and the detailed body paragraphs. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'By contrast', 'This was followed by', and 'Thus', to guide the reader through the data. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The relationship between the ideas is clear, and the use of referencing is accurate throughout the text. The structure is logical and supports the overall purpose of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, including terms like 'accounted for', 'time-consuming', and 'considerably higher'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more varied synonyms for 'spent' or 'figures' to avoid repetition. For example, using 'devoted to' or 'allocated to' would add sophistication. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the data without any noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Students spent 13 days studying, which was considerably higher than the figures for the other two countries.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing a good level of accuracy. To improve further, you could experiment with more complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses or passive voice, to enhance the flow and variety of your writing.
