IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart depicts the typical weekday for students in three different countries. Three categories have been discussed, in which students spent their weekday time, which include sleeping, studying, and relaxing.
Overall, the most striking feature is that students spent a massive amount of time studying, followed by sleeping and relaxing. However, students in the UK and Japan have managed their time equally in all three figures.
It is evident that students of Japan spent 13 hours, a significant amount of time in their studies, followed by 7 and 4 hours in sleeping and relaxing respectively. On the other hand, students in the UK have distributed their time equally in all three categories, spending 8.5 hours in sleeping, the highest than of three, followed closely by studying with 8 hours and 7 hours in relaxing.
In Germany, students spent a significant amount of time in studies like in Japan. They spent 9 hours in studying, followed closely by sleeping with 8 hours, while in relaxing they spent 7 hours of their weekday time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the chart and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified the key data points for Japan, the UK, and Germany. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; for instance, stating that students in the UK and Japan managed their time 'equally' is confusing and not supported by the data, as the distributions differ significantly. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most significant differences or trends rather than making vague claims about equality. The data reporting is generally accurate, though the comparison could be more analytical by grouping countries with similar trends rather than listing them country-by-country.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for each country. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'followed by' to link ideas. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the data points between the three countries, rather than relying on a repetitive structure for each paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'depicts', 'striking feature', and 'distributed'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'managed their time equally in all three figures', which is imprecise. Additionally, the phrase 'highest than of three' is grammatically incorrect and awkward. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing the data. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. For example, 'highest than of three' should be 'the highest of the three', and 'spent a significant amount of time in studies like in Japan' is slightly clunky. There are also minor issues with preposition usage and article placement. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these small errors prevents the writing from being considered error-free or highly controlled.
