Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt but fails to provide a clear overview or a logical summary of the main features. The data presentation is problematic; for instance, the student uses percentages (e.g., 8.5%) where the chart likely refers to hours, leading to a misinterpretation of the data. While the response mentions all three countries, the lack of clear comparison and the inaccurate reporting of figures prevent it from fully addressing the task. The information is presented in a fragmented manner, making it difficult for the reader to identify the key trends or significant differences between the student groups in the three countries.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. The paragraphs are poorly defined, and the progression of ideas is disjointed. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas, which makes the text difficult to follow. For example, the transition between describing the data and attempting a summary is abrupt and confusing. The use of referencing is weak, and the overall arrangement of information does not facilitate a clear understanding of the bar chart. To improve, the student should focus on using clear paragraphing—one for the introduction/overview and one or two for the detailed comparisons—and employ linking words like 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'similarly'.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is very limited and often inaccurate. The student struggles to use appropriate terminology for describing data, such as 'highest record' or 'lowest relaxing country', which are not standard academic collocations. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'collages' instead of 'colleges'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information precisely, and the repetition of basic terms hinders the flow of the writing. To reach a higher band, the student needs to learn specific vocabulary for describing charts, such as 'proportion', 'significant', 'contrast', and 'fluctuate'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as run-on sentences and fragments (e.g., 'the similarity between these countries sleeping where both countries are upward and downwards in numbers'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, and there are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. The student relies almost exclusively on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are largely unsuccessful due to poor control of grammar. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement is essential for improvement.
