Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart compares the typical weekday for students in three different countries namely United Kingdom, Japan and Germany.

Overall, it is evident that studying time had the significant increase with the two countries, however it decline gradually in one country. This means that students generally use their time studying. In contrast, students spent less of their time relaxing.

Looking first at the percentage of sleeping, students in UK had 8%, 13% in Japan and 9% in Germany respectively. In contrast, relaxing had the lowest proportion among the three countries with 7% both in UK and Germany and 4% in Japan.

Turning to sleeping, it stayed relatively constant among the countries stood at 8.5% in United Kingdom, whereas .5% lower to the rate of Germany. It was 7% in Japan. Notably the most significant comparison can be seen in this data was the time allotted by each student spent in the respective activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to accurately report the data provided in the chart. The summary is confusing, as it mentions 'studying time' increasing, yet the chart categories (sleeping, relaxing, etc.) are not clearly defined or correctly interpreted. The overview is vague and does not highlight the main trends effectively. Furthermore, the data points provided in the body paragraphs are inconsistent and appear to contradict the visual information, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison. To improve, ensure you clearly identify the categories and accurately transcribe the percentages from the chart, focusing on the most significant differences and similarities between the three countries.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While there are some cohesive devices used, such as 'In contrast' and 'Turning to', they are often used incorrectly or to link unrelated ideas. The referencing is unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the mention of '.5% lower' is confusing and lacks context. The flow between sentences is disjointed, which hinders the overall readability of the report. To improve, focus on using cohesive devices to link related data points and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'studying time had the significant increase' and 'the most significant comparison can be seen in this data was the time allotted'. These errors occasionally impede the clarity of the message. The vocabulary used is basic and lacks the precision required for an academic report. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more varied and precise terminology to describe trends, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuation', 'a marginal difference', or 'a substantial disparity'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the information. There are issues with article usage ('in UK'), subject-verb agreement ('it decline'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'whereas .5% lower to the rate of Germany', which is grammatically incomplete. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction and ensure that your verb tenses and prepositions are used correctly. Proofreading for minor errors like missing articles or incorrect verb forms will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
