Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. Furthermore, the content contains serious factual errors; for instance, the student describes the data in 'days' rather than 'hours', and the interpretation of the data is inaccurate (e.g., stating Japan spent 13 days studying). While the response attempts to summarize the main features, the misinterpretation of the units and the failure to reach the required length mean that the task is only partially addressed. To improve, ensure you carefully read the axis labels and provide a more thorough analysis of the data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into three short paragraphs, which is a logical structure for a report. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the factual inaccuracies and the lack of sufficient detail. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Moving ahead', but they feel somewhat mechanical. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the comparison between countries becomes confusing due to the incorrect data interpretation. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, accurate focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Words like 'figure', 'days', and 'countries' are used frequently. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. Additionally, the misuse of 'days' instead of 'hours' indicates a lack of precision in reporting data. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a broader range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'proportion', 'allocated', or 'significant', and ensure that your terminology is accurate to the context of the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors that affect clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'relaxing time show fluctuations' and 'the figure show'. Additionally, there are punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'Uk' instead of 'UK'. The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic capitalization and pluralization errors.
