Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart compares the sleeping, studying and relaxing activity in three countries, which are UK, Japan and Germany.

The overall trend toward studying is leading in Japan and Germany. And the sleeping activity is on second followed by relaxing. On the other hand, the sleeping activity is most popular in the public of United kingdom.

The study time is highest in Japan in weekdays, which is almost 13. But it decreases in the Germany to 9 followed by UK at 8.

However, the sleeping habit is at 8.5 in UK, which is highest in these countries. And the activity is less famous in Germany and Japan almost around 8 and 7 respetively.

However, the factor that is less practiced in all three countries is the relaxing. The level is at 7 for both the UK and the Germany. But it shows a significant number of decrease in Japan. In this asian country, the relaxing is less popular making it around 4.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart, identifying the primary activities in each country. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, you mention that study time is 'almost 13' in Japan, but you do not specify the unit of measurement (hours), which is crucial for clarity. Additionally, the comparison between countries is occasionally imprecise, such as stating that sleeping is 'most popular in the public of United kingdom' rather than focusing on the data points. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a clear overview and support all claims with accurate data references while maintaining a formal, objective tone throughout the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'However' and 'And' to start sentences. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the transition between the description of study time and sleeping habits could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'the activity is less famous in Germany', where 'the activity' refers back to sleeping but feels disconnected. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You use basic descriptors like 'leading', 'popular', and 'famous' to describe statistical data, which is not ideal for an academic report. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'sleeping activity is on second' and 'significant number of decrease'. To improve, you should use more precise terminology related to data interpretation, such as 'the highest proportion', 'a notable decline', or 'the second most time-consuming activity'. Expanding your range of academic vocabulary will help convey information more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'the sleeping, studying and relaxing activity' (should be plural), 'in weekdays' (should be 'on weekdays'), and 'respetively' (spelling error). Additionally, there are issues with article usage, such as 'in the Germany' and 'in the UK'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will significantly improve your accuracy.
