Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates, how students in UK, Japan and Germany spend their weekdays.

Overall, the highest number of students, who study during their weekday were from Japan. Similarly they recorded the least number of students who sleep and relax during working day. On the other hand, UK and Germany have same students who relax.

In UK students sleep about 8.5 out of 24 hours during a working day, 8 hours of study and remaining 7 hours to relax. By contrast, majority of the students in Japan study most of the time during their working day, which are 13 hours. Students relax only 4 hours, which is the least time as compared to the other two countries and they sleep rest of the 7 hours.

In comparison to this, students in Germany study 9 hours a day and sleep for about 8 hours. Similar to UK, students in Germany also relax for about 7 hours during a business day.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You covered all three countries and made relevant comparisons between them, such as noting that Japan has the highest study hours and the lowest relaxation time. However, the report could be improved by ensuring more precise data reporting; for instance, stating 'UK and Germany have same students who relax' is inaccurate as you are referring to the number of hours, not the number of students. Additionally, ensure you include all units of measurement clearly. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the data. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand', 'By contrast', and 'In comparison to this', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly mechanical, and there is a minor issue with clarity in the overview regarding the comparison of student numbers versus hours spent. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'recorded', and 'majority'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'working day' to describe a student's typical weekday, which is slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same sentence structures when describing the data for each country.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the highest number of students, who study during their weekday were from Japan' (the comma is unnecessary) and 'UK and Germany have same students who relax' (missing articles: 'the UK' and 'the same number of hours'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent use of articles and more varied complex sentence forms.
