Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by identifying the main features of the bar chart. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For example, the student claims the UK has 8.5% of students sleeping, which is a misinterpretation of the data provided. Furthermore, the comparison between countries is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical structure. While the main features are mentioned, the lack of precision in reporting the figures means the response does not fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band. To improve, ensure that data points are transcribed accurately and that comparisons are grouped logically rather than listing figures country by country.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes misused, such as the repetitive use of 'moreover' and 'finally'. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt, and the lack of proper punctuation—specifically missing full stops and inconsistent capitalisation—makes the text difficult to follow. The logical progression of ideas is hindered by these structural issues. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic phrases like 'highest percentage' and 'spend their weekdays'. There are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'young individuals who spent their weekday in studies'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate flexibility or precision. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied terminology to describe trends, such as 'account for', 'the majority of', 'a significant proportion', or 'the lowest figure'. Additionally, ensure that you use appropriate collocations when describing data trends to avoid sounding unnatural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Germany students has minor change'), missing articles, and run-on sentences. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also a major weakness, with several sentences lacking terminal punctuation or proper capitalisation. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb forms and the use of articles. Once these are consistent, work on combining simple sentences into more complex structures using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions.
