The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the distribution of activities done by students on a weekday in the UK, Japan and Germany. The activities include sleeping, studying and relaxing.
Overall, students in all countries except the UK spent most of their time studying whereas the British students prioritized sleeping more than studying. Furthermore, relaxing accounts for the least number of hours among all activities in each nation. However, unlike other countries, Japan had the largest differences in proportion among the activities.
In terms of sleeping, the UK was in the top position, comprising 8.5 hours. Germany came as the second nation with 8 hours, followed by Japan at 7 hours.
Regarding studying, the Japanese students spent 13 hours in a day whereas Germany and the UK stand at 9 and 8 hours, respectively.
Referring to relaxing, the German and British students are at a similar level, at 7 hours. However, Japan constitutes only 4 hours which is the lowest number of hours compared to the given countries and activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the bar chart and provided relevant comparisons. You clearly highlighted the differences in time allocation between the three countries, such as the contrast between Japanese study hours and the sleeping habits of British students. The overview is effective, providing a clear summary of the trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately represented; for instance, you noted that relaxing accounts for the least number of hours in each nation, but in Germany, the time spent relaxing (7 hours) is actually close to the time spent sleeping (8 hours), making the 'least' claim slightly inaccurate. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by activity. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In terms of', and 'Regarding' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of information. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be more fluid. However, the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, and referencing is generally accurate.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'distribution of activities', 'prioritized', and 'comprising' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'Japan had the largest differences in proportion among the activities' and 'Germany came as the second nation'. While these do not impede communication, refining these expressions would demonstrate a more sophisticated control of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Overall, students in all countries except the UK spent most of their time studying whereas the British students prioritized sleeping more than studying.' Most sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'Germany and the UK stand at 9 and 8 hours, respectively' (which should be 'stood' to maintain consistent past tense). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures.
