Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the chart, providing an overview and comparing activities across the three countries. However, there are notable inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the student refers to the units as percentages ('13%', '9%', '8%'), whereas the chart measures hours per day. Furthermore, the student claims that in the UK 'the number of students who sleep on weekend was greatest', misinterpreting the weekday data. The overview is somewhat basic, though it captures the general contrast between studying in Japan/Germany and sleeping in the UK. Due to the misinterpretation of units and minor data inaccuracies, this response falls into Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then supporting body paragraphs. However, logical progression is hindered by confusing sentence structures and abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive. For example, phrases like 'In Japan and Germany' and 'In the UK' are relied upon heavily to structure the text rather than a more varied range of cohesive links. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks smooth connectivity, resulting in a somewhat disjointed reading experience. This aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary, featuring relevant topic-specific terms like 'activities', 'students', 'studying', 'sleeping', and 'relaxing'. However, the range is limited, and the writer repeatedly uses basic phrasing. There are notable lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'ratio' instead of 'proportion' or 'amount', and the misuse of percentages instead of hours. While communication is not entirely impeded, the lack of flexibility and precision keeps the lexical resource at a Band 5 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. For example, the opening sentence lacks a main verb ('The bar chart illustrate...'), and there are missing articles, such as 'in UK' instead of 'in the UK'. Punctuation is also faulty, with missing commas after introductory prepositional phrases. Although simple sentences are generally understandable, errors occur frequently when attempting more complex relationships, which aligns with the Band 5 descriptors.
