Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features for each of the three countries shown in the bar chart. Data points are cited correctly, such as 13 hours for studying in Japan and 8.5 hours for sleeping in the UK. However, the overview statement contains a slight factual inaccuracy by claiming that spending time on sleeping was highest in the UK (Germany actually recorded a similar 8 hours, but Japan was 7; furthermore, studying in Japan was the highest overall figure at 13 hours). The overview could be more comprehensive by highlighting the most striking contrast, which is Japan's exceptionally high study hours compared to the other two nations. Nevertheless, all main categories—sleeping, studying, and relaxing—are addressed with relevant comparisons where appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organised into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each country, ensuring a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally clumsy or slightly mechanical, as seen in the phrase 'in comparison of the other countries' instead of 'compared to other countries', and the repetitive sentence structures used to introduce data across paragraphs. Paragraphing is adequate, but transitions between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with appropriate topic-specific terms such as 'bar graph', 'activities', 'relaxation', and 'dedicated'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'thoroughly analysing', 'exceptionally', and 'appropriate'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'in the Japan' (unnecessary article), 'in comparison of' (incorrect preposition), and 'relaxing body are same as' (awkward phrasing and grammatical mismatch). Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'three specific country namely' (missing plural and punctuation), 'In the Japan and Germany students' (erroneous article and comma splice), and '7 hour's in relaxation' (unnecessary apostrophe). Another error occurs in the final sentence: 'relaxing body are same as UK students', where subject-verb agreement and parallelism fail. Despite these frequent minor errors and awkward phrasings, communication is not impeded, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
