IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart illustrates the data from three different countries. This data is based on the typical weekday for students.
Overall, the countries are UK, Japan, Germany. In Japan, the most of the time of weekdays is consumed by students in studying and very little time is given to relaxing.
To begin with, in UK the sleeping is in majority as most of the time is spend on sleeping by students. Around 8.5 hours a day are spent on sleeping. Same as sleeping, the studying is also given preference, and only 7 hours are spend on relaxing. Germany is also having same record as UK. Since, sleeping and relaxing are consuming same time as in UK but there is slight change in studying as 9 hours are spend on studying.
Furthermore, in Japan the most preference is given to studying as 13 hours are spend on studying. 7 hours are given to sleeping and very few time is given to relaxing. Among the whole data the least time is given for relaxing is in Japan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the bar chart comparing the typical weekday for students in the UK, Japan, and Germany. The overview is somewhat weak, merely listing the countries rather than highlighting key trends, but the response does report main features such as Japan's high studying hours (13 hours) and the UK and Germany's figures for sleeping (8.5 and 8 hours) and relaxing (7 hours). However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting the UK data, where the student claims studying is 'given preference' alongside sleeping, whereas the chart shows studying in the UK is actually 8 hours, slightly lower than sleeping at 8.5 hours. Furthermore, some data points are slightly vague or repetitive. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, earning a band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is arranged with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding remark, showing a logical attempt at paragraphing. However, progression is somewhat hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions such as 'To begin with, in UK the sleeping is in majority'. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, as seen with 'Same as sleeping, the studying is also given preference' and 'Germany is also having same record as UK'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the overall flow lacks the sophisticated cohesion seen at higher bands. Paragraphing is adequate, but the connections between sentences feel mechanical at times. This warrants a band 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate to communicate the basic points of the chart, but it is repetitive and limited in range. Phrases like 'most of the time', 'spend on', and 'given to' are overused throughout the text. There are also noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'the sleeping is in majority', 'Germany is also having same record', and 'very few time' instead of 'very little time'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'preference' and 'consumed', but control is inconsistent. While communication is not severely impeded, the lexical limitations cap the score at a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complexity frequently result in grammatical errors. Examples of structural and grammatical inaccuracies include missing articles ('in UK' instead of 'in the UK'), incorrect verb forms ('are spend on' instead of 'are spent on'), and awkward verb tenses ('Germany is also having same record'). Preposition errors are also frequent, such as 'time is given for relaxing is in Japan'. Although there are some error-free basic sentences, the high frequency of grammatical slips in more complex constructions causes occasional difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar at a band 5.0.
