Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by describing the bar chart, but the response suffers from several inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that 'Japan had the highest number of sleeping,' whereas the visual data shows the UK has the highest sleeping hours (8.5 compared to Japan's 7). Furthermore, the overview is confused, and the explanation of chart colors is unnecessary and conversational. While some figures are correctly reported—such as Japan studying at 13—the overall selection and reporting of main features lack clarity and precision, resulting in a partial or muddled response. The student attempts comparisons, but these are often obscured by awkward phrasing and factual errors. Overall, this performance aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows an attempt at logical organisation with introductory, body, and concluding sentences, but the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by confusing transitions and poor referencing. Phrases like 'In this bar there are three different colours first green colour show...' are overly conversational and disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the body paragraph is dense and difficult to follow due to run-on sentences and a lack of clear cohesive devices. Referencing pronouns are often unclear, leaving the reader to guess which country or activity is being referred to. Overall, this demonstrates the characteristics of Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a very limited and repetitive vocabulary to describe the chart data, relying heavily on words like 'number,' 'activities,' 'highest,' and 'lowest.' There are notable word choice and collocation issues, such as saying 'highest number of sleeping' instead of 'most time spent sleeping' or 'highest number of hours.' Spelling is generally acceptable for common words, but the range of vocabulary is insufficient to allow for precision or flexibility. The frequent repetition of basic terms restricts the lexical score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but these are frequently marred by basic grammatical errors, awkward syntax, and run-on structures. Examples include 'Japan stood at three different weekday first of all i discuss about studying...' and 'while UK had highest number in sleeping which is 8.5 while relaxing had lowest number of activities which is 7.' Punctuation is often neglected or misused, leading to sentences that run together without clear boundaries. Frequent errors in verb tense, prepositions, and clause structure cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, placing this response firmly in Band 5.
