Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The student attempts to summarise the bar chart comparing the typical weekday of students in the UK, Japan, and Germany, but the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 117 words. This under-length penalty severely restricts the ability to fully develop the response. Furthermore, there are notable factual inaccuracies and misreadings of the visual data. For instance, the student states that 'studying was the dominant factor among all three countries by 13%' and makes confusing claims about trends and percentages, such as 'Slepping recorded rose from 7% to 8%'. While an overview is attempted, the key features are not clearly or accurately reported, leading to a low band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is structured into an introduction and a couple of body sentences, but the overall organisation is weak. Paragraphing is inadequate, as the text is compressed without clear logical progression or grouping. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the problematic use of 'while relaxing represented the minor activity followed by studying' and 'although the rate of sleeping declined , whereas relaxing followed the opposite trend'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical transitions make the progression difficult to follow, aligning closely with the descriptors for Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'highest activity done' and 'minor activity'. There are also lexical inaccuracies, including 'Slepping recorded rose' (where 'recorded' is redundant and spelling is incorrect). The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'dominant factor' and 'fluctuate', but their inaccurate application impedes clear communication. The range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic facts, but constrained by errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, with mostly simple or faulty complex sentences. There are numerous grammatical and mechanical errors, such as spacing issues ('countries(The Uk', 'declined , whereas'), punctuation mistakes, and subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'relaxing increases dramatically', 'Slepping recorded rose'). These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect limited control over complex grammar.
