Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the chart, noting the high study hours in Japan and comparing them with the UK and Germany. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the UK and Germany lead to '8.5 percent of sleeping, 8 percent in studying and 7 percent in relaxing', whereas the chart shows UK sleeping at 8.5, studying at 8, and relaxing at 7, but Germany has 8 for sleeping, 9 for studying, and 7 for relaxing. Furthermore, referring to hours as percentages is a data misinterpretation. The overview is overly simplistic, and the development lacks precision. Overall, the response addresses the prompt minimally and contains noticeable data errors, aligning it with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The introduction is a single sentence, and the body paragraphs lack clear organizational focus, moving awkwardly between countries and activities without a structured comparative framework. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, such as 'Coming to germany it is same and almost equal percentage reported', which creates a mechanical flow. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which data points belong to which country. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails to guide the reader smoothly through the data. These characteristics reflect Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical inaccuracies and misuse of terms. The student incorrectly refers to hours as 'percent' throughout the text (e.g., '8.5 percent of sleeping'). Other awkward word choices include 'ultimately highest rate', 'accompany there week day', and 'drastically at very lower side'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, the collocations and word choices are inaccurate and sometimes obscure the meaning. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall lexical control is limited and adequate only for a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent errors. Examples of structural and punctuation errors include missing capitalisation ('uk japan and Germany', 'germany and uk'), confusion of homophones/pronouns ('there week day' instead of 'their weekday'), and missing articles. Subordinate and complex structures are often faulty, such as 'Japan being in considerably elevated rate of students accompany there week day in studying'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.
