Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart compares the average numbers of hours that students in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany spend on three daily activities like sleeping, studying and relaxing during a weekday.

Overall, students in Japan spend considerably more time studying than those in the UK and Germany, while they spend the least amount of time relaxing. In contrast, sleeping hours are relatively similar in all three nations.

Students in the UK sleep for 8.5 hours per day, which is slightly higher than the figures for Japan and Germany, at 7 and 8 hours respectively. In terms of studying, Japanese students spend the most time, at 13 hours, compared with 8 hours in the UK and 9 hours in Germany.

Regarding relaxation, German and British students spend 7 hours each, whereas the figure for Japan is significantly lower, at only 4 hours. therefore, Japanese students devote much more time to studying and considerably less time to relaxing than students in the other two countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the bar chart and making relevant comparisons between the three countries. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph, highlighting that Japanese students spend significantly more time studying and the least time relaxing, while sleep is relatively uniform. All figures cited, such as the UK sleeping hours at 8.5 and Japanese studying hours at 13, accurately reflect the visual data. The ideas are well extended and supported with precise data points. To move closer to the highest bands, you could push the analysis slightly further by drawing more nuanced cross-category comparisons or noting subtle proportional relationships between the activities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly by activity and country, moving smoothly from a general overview to specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'In terms of', and 'whereas' are used effectively to link ideas and contrast data sets, although the lowercase 'therefore' at the start of the final paragraph represents a minor mechanical slip in cohesion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. To achieve an even higher band, you could ensure that cohesive links between sentences are entirely seamless and avoid any minor punctuation slips at sentence boundaries.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully employing terms such as 'considerably', 'respectively', and 'devote'. Less common vocabulary items are integrated with a reasonable awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'average numbers of hours' and 'significantly lower'. Word choice and spelling are generally accurate throughout the text, allowing communication to proceed smoothly without impediment. To elevate your lexical score further, aim to incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical items and precise synonyms to avoid repeating basic verbs like 'spend'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

Your writing displays a good variety of complex structures alongside frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating solid control of grammar and punctuation. Complex constructions such as relative clauses and participial modifiers are handled effectively, as shown in 'which is slightly higher than the figures for Japan and Germany'. Control over subject-verb agreement and prepositions is generally strong. A few minor mechanical slips persist, such as starting the final sentence with a lowercase 'therefore'. To reach the highest band, ensure complete consistency in punctuation and capitalise all sentence-starting conjunctions.
