Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response falls significantly short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 75 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially. While the writer attempts to introduce the chart and make a brief comparison regarding Japan, key data points for the UK and Germany are omitted, and the final sentence introduces irrelevant general commentary about sleep rather than focusing on the visual data. To reach higher bands, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and provide a fully developed summary covering all main features and comparisons across all three countries without straying into extraneous personal opinions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text lacks overall coherent organization and progression due to its extreme brevity and lack of proper paragraphing. The response consists of just three disjointed sentences, written as a single block without standard essay structure. While basic transition markers like 'overall' are attempted, cohesive devices are minimal and insufficient to guide the reader through a logical comparison of the data. Furthermore, referencing is weak, as seen in 'on the other hand UK and Germany', which lacks clear noun phrases. To improve, the writer needs to group related data into distinct, well-structured paragraphs and use a wider range of cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas. The writer uses standard vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'bar chart', 'weekdays', and 'studying'. However, the range is basic and repetitive, and there are awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'consume their free time in studying' instead of spending time on study. Spelling is generally accurate for the words attempted, but the lack of less common lexical items and precise collocations restricts the score. To progress, the writer should incorporate a broader variety of academic vocabulary and precise phrasing to describe statistical trends and comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with word order and clause structures, such as in the opening sentence 'the bar chart shows us the how does a student spend their weekdays', which contains an intrusive article and faulty indirect question structure. Punctuation is also neglected, with a complete lack of capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and missing terminal punctuation. To achieve higher bands, the writer must demonstrate greater control over complex sentence forms, eliminate frequent basic errors, and adhere strictly to standard punctuation rules.
