Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response partially addresses the prompt by attempting to summarise the main features of the bar chart regarding student weekdays in the UK, Japan, and Germany. While some key comparisons are made—such as highlighting Japan's high studying hours and lower relaxing hours—the data points are occasionally misreported or confusingly stated, such as referring to hours as a 'number of students'. Furthermore, the overview lacks clarity and fails to fully capture the broader trends. Importantly, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 130 words, which restricts the development of the ideas and prevents a more complete overview of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay presents some basic organisation with an introductory statement and body paragraphs addressing the data, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The grouping of information is somewhat erratic, jumping back and forth between activities and countries without a smooth logical flow. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate, such as using 'where as' rather than proper transitional phrasing. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, as the body of the essay is compressed into dense blocks that lack clear signposting of relationships between the data points presented for the three nations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors and awkward phrasings that detract from precision. Examples include 'standinding' (a spelling error for standing), 'least favourable', and 'most gravitated activity', which show an imprecise grasp of collocation and word choice. While the student attempts some less common terms like 'utilised', 'proportion', and 'comparatively', these attempts often result in unnatural phrasing or mild confusion, such as treating time allocations as a count of individual people. Spelling and word choice errors are present, though they do not completely impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing relies on a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty or poorly punctuated. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as 'Uk and Germany students spend equal time of the weekend relaxing' (referring to weekdays) and 'Japan had higher number of students'. Articles are frequently omitted, as seen in 'at 4 .Uk and Germany had equal proportion'. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally pause and interpret the intended meaning, reflecting a restricted control over grammatical structures and punctuation.
