Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by outlining the main features of the bar chart, such as studying, sleeping, and relaxing times in the UK, Japan, and Germany. However, it only partially satisfies the requirements because it falls short of the minimum 150-word length requirement, totaling 140 words. Furthermore, some data points are misread or confused with units of time, such as describing the figures as 'weekend of studing' or 'sleeping days'. While an overview is attempted at the beginning, the supporting details are limited and contain inaccuracies regarding the visual data, preventing the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some organization with an introductory sentence and basic transitional phrases like 'overall', 'However', and 'According to the bar graph'. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical paragraphing, as the essay is presented in two dense blocks of text with mechanical and repetitive use of cohesive devices. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the ideas jump between categories without smooth logical transitions. To improve, the writer needs to group related data more logically into structured paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive links naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary usage is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and comparative structures, but noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation impede communication. Examples include 'studing' instead of studying, 'germany' with incorrect capitalization, 'maxmium', 'realxing', and referring to daily hours as 'weekend of studing' or 'sleeping days'. To reach a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, ensure correct word forms, and eliminate frequent spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that contain major grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with punctuation, capitalization ('uk', 'japan', 'germany'), articles, and prepositions, such as 'in UK country' and missing articles before countries and numbers. Because of these frequent errors, the reader has to work harder to understand the intended meaning. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and improving basic grammatical control are essential for progress.
