Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only minimally, failing to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words by falling short at 121 words. While the student attempts to summarise the bar chart regarding students' typical weekdays in the UK, Japan, and Germany, the data reported is heavily confused with mixing up percentages and hours, resulting in inaccurate information (for example, stating that the UK slept in 8.5 in 9 days). The overview is extremely brief and lacks a clear, accurate summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, report the visual data accurately without mixing numerical units, and provide a fully developed overview of the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text shows some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'on the one hand' and 'on the other hand'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by confusing data integration and sentence structures. Reference words are occasionally unclear or repetitive, and paragraph divisions do not follow a clear logical pattern for comparing the categories. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the student should structure the essay into clear logical paragraphs—such as an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs for comparisons—and use cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader smoothly through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and marred by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as using percentages and days incorrectly alongside hours (e.g., 'slept in 8.5 in 9 days' and 'relaxing 7 percent'). Spelling and word forms are also problematic at times, straining the reader's comprehension. The lexical range is minimally adequate for conveying basic concepts but lacks the precision needed for a chart summary. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to incorporate a wider and more accurate range of vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'spend', 'hours', 'average', and 'proportion', whilst ensuring correct word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on fragmented or faultily constructed sentences. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, prepositions, and sentence boundaries (e.g., 'germany have sleeping', 'uk increased their slepping time and japan rose'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty and confusion for the reader. To improve in this criterion, the student must focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and a correctly conjugated verb, and practice using simple and complex structures with greater accuracy.
