Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a fully developed overview and accurate reporting of the data. For instance, the overview correctly highlights that studying is the most time-consuming activity for students in Japan and Germany, whereas sleeping takes precedence in the UK. The student selects key features effectively, such as Japanese students spending 13 hours studying and only 4 hours relaxing, while making clear and relevant comparisons across the three countries. All figures cited—such as 8.5 hours for UK sleep and 9 hours for German studying—are accurately drawn from the visual data without any noticeable omissions or inaccuracies. To achieve the highest band, the analysis could incorporate even finer nuance or subtle implications of the data, but the current response fully satisfies the requirements of a well-crafted Academic Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction to the overview and then into detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with a clear introductory paragraph, an overarching summary paragraph, and well-organized body paragraphs that group data logically by activity (sleeping, then studying and relaxing). Cohesive devices are managed skilfully and naturally throughout the text, as seen in phrases such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at', 'In terms of', and 'Finally'. Referencing and substitution are handled with precision, ensuring that the relationships between the countries and their respective time allocations remain clear and unambiguous from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic report. Less common lexical items and functional phrases are used with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'most time-consuming activity', 'considerably more time', 'substantially higher', and 'devote only 4 hours to leisure activities'. Word choice and spelling are accurate throughout, with only occasional minor slips that do not impede communication. To reach the highest level of lexical sophistication, the student could employ even more varied synonyms for time and quantities to avoid minor repetitions, but the current range easily supports precision and fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response features a wide range of complex structures used with a high degree of control. The majority of sentences are error-free, and complex grammatical patterns—such as non-defining relative clauses, participial phrases, and comparative structures ('whereas Japanese students devote only 4 hours...')—are integrated smoothly. Verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions are handled with excellent accuracy. Punctuation is also well managed, allowing complex sentences to be read with ease. To push into the highest band, the writer could incorporate an even wider variety of advanced syntactic structures, but the current grammatical performance is robust and reliable.
