Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only minimally addresses the task, failing to reach the minimum length requirement of 150 words as it contains only 107 words. While the student attempts to report on the bar chart by mentioning sleeping, studying, and relaxing across the UK, Germany, and Japan, the information is presented in a fragmented and disjointed way. For instance, the data for Japan contains a notable confusion where studying is 13, but the student states that 'sleep and relaxing least percent at 7 and 4' when Japan's sleeping value is actually 7 and studying is 13. Furthermore, the overview lacks clarity and fails to fully capture the main trends of the visual data. To improve, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and provide a more accurate, fully developed summary of all key features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with attempts at an overview and separate body details, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is disjointed, consisting of very short, isolated sentences and paragraphs that do not flow logically. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as the frequent use of 'In contrast' and 'while' used incorrectly to connect unrelated points. For example, writing 'Japan accounted 13 in sleeping while sleep and relaxing least percent at 7 and 4' confuses the categories and disrupts the logical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between countries. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to group related information more logically, use a wider range of cohesive devices naturally, and ensure clear transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'rate', 'level', 'bigger', and 'less than'. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices that strain the reader, such as writing 'daily holiday' instead of 'weekday' and referring to data points as 'rates' or 'percent' when they represent hours. Spelling and word formation errors also appear, including missing articles and incorrect plurals. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic information, but it lacks the precision and flexibility needed to discuss statistical charts effectively. To improve, the student should incorporate a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary, such as verbs and nouns relating to trends and proportions, and pay closer attention to natural word combinations and correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, leading to incorrect syntax and awkward phrasing, such as 'Overall, in studying the Japan have highest rate while Germany accounted average rate.' There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the bar chart illustrate', 'UK have least rate'), and missing prepositions or articles. Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect spacing around commas and full stops. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To move up to a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms while improving basic grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding verb tenses, articles, and agreement.
