Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the chart, providing a general overview and reporting key data points such as the 13 hours of studying in Japan and the 8.5 hours of sleeping in the UK. However, the information is partially incomplete or slightly inaccurate in places, such as misinterpreting the chart as representing a seven-day period rather than a typical weekday. While some main features are selected and compared, the development of ideas lacks consistency, and some observations, such as the overall conclusion about imbalancing sleep, rely on minor over-generalisation without fully supporting all details for Germany and the UK. To reach a higher level, the response would need to ensure a more accurate representation of the visual data and provide fully extended and supported comparisons across all three countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some basic organization with an introductory attempt, body sentences, and a concluding remark, creating a minimally coherent overall arrangement. However, there is a lack of clear logical progression and paragraphing is underdeveloped, with ideas grouped into a single dense and slightly rambling body section. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate, such as abrupt transitional phrases like 'At a glance-' and 'in Conclusion-'. Referencing is also at times unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of comparisons between the countries smoothly. To improve coherence, the response requires more skillful logical sequencing, distinct paragraph breaks for different categories or countries, and a wider, more natural range of cohesive ties.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'pasionate', 'contribute', and 'imbalancing', but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling mistakes and awkward word choices, such as 'english students spent there large time' and 'germany is desint in the term of studying'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including misspelling 'different' as 'diffrent', 'their' as 'there', 'straight' as 'strieght', 'Japanese' as 'japanies', and 'among' as 'amougn'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control of word formation and spelling. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range and eliminate basic spelling and collocation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures. While there are a few attempts at complex sentences, such as 'however if we look german students and Uk students spent 7 hours in there relaxation', these attempts are often faulty and lack proper punctuation. Frequent errors occur in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, for instance in 'The chart illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'students give 13 hours into it and focusing less', and missing articles throughout the text. Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect capitalization and hyphenation in transitions. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over basic grammatical rules.
