Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given bar graph illustrates the normal days for learners in three different nations such as, UK, Japan, Germany.

Overall, what stands out from the bar is that in the Japan, most of the students spend their time on study whereas Germany and UK pupils are almost same. Another notable point is that only 4 percent of scholars relax in their weekdays in Japan while the percentages are same in both others countries about this category.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart, such as studying hours in Japan and the balanced routine in Germany. An overview is present, noting key general trends like Japanese students spending most of their time studying. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the student states that 'only 4 percent of scholars relax', misinterpreting the hours on the axis as percentages. Similarly, mentioning that 'pupils spend a big amount of time in studying' lacks sufficient data extension for all countries. To reach a higher level, the response would need to more accurately report specific figures and provide fully extended comparisons across all categories without misinterpreting the units.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for specific countries, and a general overview. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The use of transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' attempts to structure the text, but referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'the percentages are same in both others countries'. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression within paragraphs feels disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures and awkward grouping of data. To improve, the writer needs to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between overview statements and detailed data points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items and synonyms such as 'scholars', 'pupils', and 'schoolchildren'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, the phrase 'normal days' is less natural than 'typical weekday', and the expression 'spend their times in sleeping' contains a grammatical interference affecting lexical naturalness. There are also awkward phrasings like 'in the Japan' and 'neraby same amount'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, but they restrict the score. To progress, the writer should focus on precise word choice and natural collocational patterns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and introductory phrases. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Preposition and article errors are frequent, such as 'in the Japan', 'in the Germany', and 'in their eveyday life'. There are also minor subject-verb agreement and structural awkwardnesses, such as 'spend their times in sleeping, studying and relaxing are about 8.5'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles, prepositions, and verb patterns.
