Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the bar chart, such as noting that Japanese students spend the most time studying at 13 hours and that UK students lead in sleeping at 8.5 hours. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack support, and there are occasional inaccuracies in reporting the data, such as stating that UK students spend 8 hours studying when the chart shows 8 hours for studying in Germany and 8 hours for studying in the UK (the UK is actually 8 for studying and 8.5 for sleeping, while the chart shows UK studying at 8). The overview is present at the beginning but is quite basic, summarising that students divide their time among sleeping, studying, and relaxing, which satisfies the requirements for a modest level of task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise information into paragraphs, but cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There is a lack of effective linking words and a clear logical progression between sentences. For instance, sentences are often strung together with commas or weak transition words like 'Whereas' and 'However', and referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of information. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, as the body of the text is crammed into a single block without distinct separation of ideas or comparisons, which pulls down the overall structural score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'balanced', 'minimal', and 'management'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('foe' instead of 'for', 'comapard', 'stuyding', 'realxing', 'alot') and word-choice inaccuracies, such as saying students 'contribute there time' instead of 'spend their time'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to restrict the score, showing that vocabulary control needs greater precision and attention to word forms and standard spelling conventions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures like 'compared to the other two countries students'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage throughout the text, including missing prepositions, faulty verb forms ('the Japan students spent', 'are rose'), and run-on sentences. Punctuation is particularly weak, with comma splices connecting independent clauses incorrectly (e.g., 'sleeping is about 7hrs in Japan which is perfectly balanced, the time spent for relaxing is minimal...'). These grammatical slips cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher level of accuracy.
