Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the bar chart, such as the highest study hours in Japan and the identical leisure time in the UK and Germany. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or imprecise, such as describing sleep duration differences. Furthermore, a negative impact on this criterion is the word count penalty, as the response falls short of the minimum 150-word requirement, containing only 141 words. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure adequate length and provide a more fully extended discussion of all data points without minor inaccuracies in data reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory statement to an overview and body paragraphs detailing the categories. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Another notable feature is that', and 'while it is the same in UK and Germany'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is utilised, but the organizational structure could be made smoother and more natural to achieve a superior level of flow and connectivity throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'duration', 'accounts for', 'leisure time', and 'activities'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'numbr' instead of 'number' and 'duartion' instead of 'duration', as well as awkward word choices and collocations like 'time for study records the highest' and 'spend' instead of 'spent'. To progress to a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater control over less common lexical items, improve word formation, and eliminate spelling slips entirely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at comparative structures and relative clauses, such as 'that is the greatest time spend by Japanese students'. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present, including preposition misuse ('accounts for by far', 'spend in Japan'), missing articles ('in UK'), and awkward relative clauses. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they occur with enough frequency to keep the grammar score at this level. To achieve a higher band, the student should produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure accurate prepositions and articles.
