Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response falls severely short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 51 words. As a result, the task is addressed only minimally. While the student attempts to introduce the chart and make a general statement about studying being the highest activity, the body of the response trails off incompletely and fails to report the main features or make meaningful comparisons across all three categories (sleeping, studying, and relaxing) for the UK, Japan, and Germany. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and fully develop an overview alongside detailed, data-supported comparisons of the chart's categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic structural awareness through the use of introductory framing such as 'Overall' and 'First of all'. However, the overall arrangement is heavily compromised by the extreme brevity of the text. The second paragraph breaks off mid-sentence ('most students in Japan and Germany preferred sleeping'), leading to an abrupt and incomplete conclusion without logical progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the lack of developed body paragraphs prevents any effective sequencing of information. To improve, the writer needs to structure multiple cohesive paragraphs that logically present data points, comparisons, and an overview.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, utilizing everyday terms such as 'bar chart', 'weekday activities', 'students', and 'sleeping'. There are noticeable lexical inadequacies, such as the awkward phrasing 'studying was the most activity that students do', where the word 'most' is used incorrectly instead of a superlative adjective or noun phrase like 'the most popular activity'. Spelling is generally accurate within the limited scope, but the range is far too narrow to allow for flexibility or precision. To achieve a higher score, the student must expand their vocabulary range to include appropriate academic collocations and less common lexical items related to statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting only of simple and basic complex forms. There are notable grammatical errors, particularly in collocation and article usage, such as omitting the definite article in 'students in UK' instead of 'students in the UK'. Furthermore, the final sentence is incomplete, halting abruptly in the middle of a comparison. While simple past or present tense patterns are generally attempted, the lack of extended writing makes it difficult to assess sustained grammatical control. To improve, the writer must produce a greater variety of error-free sentences, including accurate complex structures and correct article usage.
