Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the bar chart and making relevant comparisons across the three countries. The overview correctly highlights the dominant and minimal activities, such as studying being the most popular and relaxing the least, except for some minor confusion. Key data points are accurately cited, including Japan's 13 hours of studying and the United Kingdom's 8.5 hours of sleeping. However, there is a tendency to slightly over-generalise or state some comparisons loosely, and certain points lack full extension, which places the response securely at this level rather than a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to logically sequence information by grouping activities or countries into paragraphs. Paragraphing is used, separating the overview from the body details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and awkward, particularly with repetitive transitional phrases like "To begin with" and "While" used consecutively in short, choppy sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow lacks smooth progression between ideas, preventing the response from achieving a higher level of cohesive control.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like "illustrates", "activity", and "portion". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as "diffrent" instead of different, "diffrence" instead of difference, and "favourite" instead of unpopular or least preferred when describing relaxing in Japan. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as subordinate clauses beginning with "While". However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include missing articles ("at middle of 9 hours"), preposition errors ("spent most of their time sleeping 8.5 hours"), awkward phrasing, and incorrect comparative structures ("the least comparing to Japan"). While meaning is generally clear, the high density of structural errors prevents the grammar score from rising.
