Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response only partially addresses the task requirements. Notably, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 142 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum (excluding the 9 words copied from the prompt). While the student attempts to present some key features from the bar chart, such as mentioning that Japan has the highest studying time at 13 hours and the UK leads in sleeping at 8.5 hours, the data presentation is marred by inaccuracies and confusion. For instance, the text claims that 'germany has highest number of studying it hasbeen 9', which contradicts the data showing Japan is the highest. Furthermore, ideas are limited and under-developed, and the overview lacks clarity due to confusing phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation with the use of introductory and concluding phrases, such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion', but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, relying heavily on basic linkers like 'and' or run-on structures without proper punctuation. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is weak. For example, sentences jump between countries and categories abruptly without guiding the reader smoothly through comparisons. Referencing and pronoun use are also unclear at times, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that cause some difficulty for the reader. The student repeatedly uses simplistic phrasing such as 'highest number of studying' or 'relaxing time is not much' instead of accurate terms like 'hours spent studying' or 'leisure time'. There are also awkward collocations and word forms, such as 'japan students have much time for studying' and 'they sleeping 8'. Spelling is generally acceptable for common words, but the overall lexical control remains basic and restricts the precision needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple or poorly connected clauses. Attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences and a lack of standard punctuation, such as missing capitalisation for proper nouns like 'japan', 'germany', and 'uk'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, and agreements, including 'japan has highest number', 'it hasbeen 9', and 'they sleeping 8'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of basic grammatical patterns and sentence boundaries.
