Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart while making relevant comparisons between the three countries. You provide an overview in the second paragraph mentioning that students in Japan focus more on studying and less on relaxing, while UK and German learners show different patterns. Specific data points are accurately cited from the visual source, such as Japan spending 13 hours studying and the UK recording 8.5 hours for sleeping. However, some parts of the response are slightly repetitive and under-developed, particularly in the reporting of minor comparisons. To reach a higher band, the overview could be sharper and the data synthesis could be more seamlessly integrated rather than relying on a listing approach.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the answer into an introduction, overview, and body details. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, such as starting multiple sentences with 'For study purposes', 'For sleeping', and 'For relax'. Paragraphing is also disrupted by a lack of clear separation between ideas, creating a dense block of text in the body. Reference words are occasionally unclear or repetitive, such as 'both were 7 so both uk and germany again on same level'. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, you should use a wider variety of transition markers and ensure logical grouping of data so that information flows smoothly from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey basic comparisons and report figures effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary and task-specific terms such as 'illustrates', 'accounts for', and 'highest number of study'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, collocation, and word-form errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'more focus on studying' instead of 'more focused', 'lowest on relax' instead of 'relaxation', and 'germany more demonstrate on study' instead of 'demonstrate more dedication to studying'. Spelling and morphological inaccuracies like 'similiar' and 'japan students seems lowest' also occur. To improve in this area, focus on learning correct word forms (nouns vs. verbs) and natural collocations for describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are often affected by grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with articles (e.g., 'in UK', 'highest number of study'), prepositions (e.g., 'on 2nd highest position'), and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'japan students seems lowest', 'uk spend'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While communication is not entirely impeded and some sentences are error-free, the frequency of basic grammatical slips places this response firmly in the lower range. To achieve a higher band, you need to exercise better control over basic sentence construction, verb tenses, and article usage.
