Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by covering the data for the three countries across the three activities. An attempt at an overview is provided, noting the highest time spent on studying by Japanese students and the lowest time spent on relaxing overall. However, some ideas and comparisons are under-developed or presented awkwardly, such as referring to activities as "the second activity" or "third activity(relaxing)" rather than integrating them smoothly into the discussion. The figures reported are generally accurate according to the chart, such as the 8.5 hours of sleeping for the UK and 13 hours of studying for Japan, but the lack of thorough synthesis and some repetitive phrasing prevent a higher level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to logically structure information by introducing the chart, summarizing general trends, and then breaking down individual country data into paragraphs. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed and progression is hindered by repetitive transitional phrases like "weekday spend on" and "Moving towards,". Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or misused, and referencing is occasionally unclear, which creates a slightly choppy flow between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating basic terms related to time allocation and activities such as "sleeping", "studying", and "relaxing". However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as "Biographical represntation" instead of graphical representation, "Japness" and "Japanees" instead of Japanese, and "maxium" instead of maximum. Word choice is often repetitive, relying heavily on the phrase "weekday spend on" instead of varying verbs or synonyms, which restricts the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but suffers from frequent grammatical errors. There are persistent issues with passive voice and verb formation, such as "weekday spend by learners" instead of spent, and "hours of weekday spend on" rather than hours spent on weekdays. Article errors and prepositions are also evident, such as "in UK" missing the definite article, and awkward modifier placement. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding the overall data, they occur frequently enough to impact readability and control.
