Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing 134 words instead of the required 150, with 8 words copied directly from the prompt. While the student attempts to summarise the bar chart by mentioning categories such as sleeping, studying, and relaxing across the UK, Japan, and Germany, the task is addressed only partially. The overview is overly generalised and contains inaccurate statements, such as claiming most categories experienced an increase or decrease over a period, whereas the chart shows static data for a typical weekday rather than a time series. Key features are insufficiently developed, and some comparisons are vague or misreported, keeping the response at a lower level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall statement attempt, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but transitions between ideas feel mechanical and repetitive. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the frequent misuse of 'whereas' and 'on the other hand' without contrasting clauses properly. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of information and makes it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic information about the chart. There are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'apperant' instead of apparent, 'gernal' instead of general, and 'cetegories' instead of categories. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary, but awkward collocations and imprecise terms, like 'sleeping students were leading tha chart', reveal a lack of precise lexical control and appropriate stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and articles, such as missing articles before country names ('in Japan', 'in UK') and erroneous commas breaking basic sentence patterns ('According to chart, In the UK...'). Frequent grammatical slips and awkward clause constructions can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader throughout the text.
